Chapter Eleven – Leona

“Hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.” Avery set the big mug, filled to overflowing, on the table in front of Leona. “And one for me.”

Avery sat down. Suzie and Karen were already drinking their beverages, having gotten to the diner earlier. “Thank you.”

“You are welcome. I’m sure you need it after being out in the snow.” Avery shivered at the thought.

“It does take some getting used to,” Suzie agreed, sipping her drink.

Karen chuckled. “You’d better get used to it, we always get snow.”

“You’ve lived here all your life, we’re all newcomers,” Avery replied. “I’ve never seen a white Christmas. It somehow makes everything more special.”

“Any minute now, there’ll be reindeer coming up the main street,” Suzie giggled.

“I’ve seen reindeer,” Karen said. “A couple of years ago, on Christmas Day...”

Avery and Suzie both looked at each other, and Karen paused, leaving her story untold.

Leona was getting used to things being left unsaid around her. Not that she liked it, but small towns had their secrets, and as much as she wanted to be accepted, she knew it might take some time.

“Thank you once again for the Christmas decorations,” Leona said to Karen, letting the whole reindeer thing go. She didn’t want to spoil the day.

“You are welcome.” Karen set her cup down on the table. “And I wanted to ask a favor in return.”

“Shoot, it’s the least I can do.” Leona was apprehensive about what Karen might want as a favor, but it couldn’t be that bad.

Karen blushed. “I’d like to buy Jack and Harry a couple of gifts. I miss that part of Christmas so much.”

Leona placed her hand on Karen’s. She’d made Neil promise not to buy them gifts, but she realized she had it all wrong. Christmas was about giving. That was what made people happy.

“Of course you can.” Leona nodded. “They would love anything you give them, I’m sure.”

“Oh, good,” Karen gushed. “Scott and I were looking online last night and we saw these adorable PJs, and then Scott spotted a Star Wars toy, and we said how much our boys would have loved something like that. Christmas is just not the same without kids.”

“You don’t have to spend too much,” Leona said. “Just a token gift would be fine.”

“Oh.” Karen dropped her gaze.

“You’ve already ordered them,” Avery said and burst out laughing. “You know, Jacob was looking too. He came up with a long list of toys he wanted to buy. He said they were for Jack and Harry, but I think he wanted half of them for himself.”

Suzie laughed. “I am glad my husband is a little more restrained, but that’s because he has a shed-load of toys already. Just in case we foster again, of course.”

They all laughed, and Leona was put at ease. “I never thought gift buying worked as therapy.”

“We are going to need to find you a bigger house, just so you can fit all these gifts in it,” Suzie said, and drained her cup. “OK, who is ready for retail therapy?”

“Me.
